Advising

Sociology degree programs have been designed to allow each student, in consultation with a Sociology faculty advisor, to develop an individualized program of study. Sociology faculty advisors are full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members. Part-time lecturer faculty do not engage in advising.

Sociology majors and minors should meet with their assigned Sociology faculty advisor regularly (at least once per semester) to make sure they are progressing on schedule toward graduation.

Assigned faculty advisors provide guidance on declaring the major/minor, choosing classes, planning a path toward graduation, applying for senior seminar, and questions related to graduation requirement issues (i.e., “red boxes” on your Academic Requirement Report). Students are welcome to see any Sociology faculty advisor for guidance on career, graduate school, and research opportunities.

Assigned Advisors

Students may make an appointment with their assigned Sociology faculty advisor during office hours or request an appointment for a different day or time.

Appointments are 15 minutes long, but you may sign up for more than one with permission from your advisor during non-peak times of the semester. Office staff do not make appointments for faculty.

Use your SSU email to schedule a faculty advising appointment below:

Upper-division (junior and senior) Sociology majors should seek advising from their assigned Sociology faculty advisor. Schedule an appointment through the Sociology Department’s office hours sign-up sheet.

Lower-division (first year and sophomore) Sociology majors should start by seeking advising from a professional academic advisor at the university's Advising and Transfer Center. Schedule an appointment through LoboConnect for help with general advising and GE classes.

Seeing an Advisor

Sociology faculty office hours start on the first day of class and end on the last day of class each semester. Faculty are not available for advising during finals week or the summer or winter breaks. If you need help during these times, please schedule an appointment in LoboConnect with a general advisor in the university's Advising and Transfer Center.

Preparing for Advising

Before scheduling an academic advising meeting with your assigned Sociology faculty advisor, please review your Academic Requirements Report and make a list of any questions. You will also find the answers to the questions we get asked the most in Sociology’s Advising Resources.
